Job Description:
Summary Directs and coordinates activities of engineering and design department to design fire sprinkler systems by performing the following duties personally or through subordinate personnel. Further, incumbent has responsibility to supervise, motivate, guide and direct outside contract designers and to provide the proper working relationship between the contract designers, general contractors and all other departments.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
oAssist in managing contract design department.
oResolves problems using solutions that involve new techniques, technologies, or concepts.
oConfers with management, production, and installation staff to determine engineering feasibility, cost effectiveness, and customer demand for new and existing systems.Develops and coordinates all schedules and activities for specific jobs and outside contract designers.
oForecasts operating costs of department and directs preparation of budget requests.
oAdvises management of new developments in city ordinances or state/federal laws that pertain to fire protection systems which may affect schedule, costs, customer relations, and/or inter-departmental relations. Provides guidance and support on code interpretation as well as first level plan review.
oProvides direction and example for interpretation and application of company policies and procedures to the engineering and designing activities.
oMaintains a working knowledge of new technologies which may improve operations, and develops recommendations accordingly.
oMaintains a working knowledge of safety policies and regulations to ensure duties of self and others are performed in a safe manner.

Supervisory Responsibilities
Directly supervises 8 to 10 outside contract designers, possibly more, in the Engineering Design Department. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the Cosco Fire Protection's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training outside contract designers; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Education and/or Experience
Bachelor's degree (B. A.) from four-year college or university; or eight to ten years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Language Skills
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

Mathematical Skills
Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

Reasoning Ability
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

Computer Skills
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of CAD Design software; Project Management software and Micro Soft Office Word Processing software.
